MVC - Conserving the Island for 50 years.

In response to the explosion of development on the Vineyard in the 1970's with subdivision and houses being built, the community was concerned so much so that on March 14, 1974, the people of Martha's Vineyard voted to endorse legislation to create the Martha's Vineyard Commission, a unique regional land and water entity that not only had planning responsibilities but also had extensive regulatory authority.

The work of the Commission continues to oversee planning and regulation for Dukes County and the six towns of Martha's Vineyard.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary there is an exhibition of the MVC through the years at Featherstone Center For the Arts.  A celebration of how the island has benefited from Commissions work over the past 50 years, it's a "must see" for anyone interested in the past, present and future of the island and conserving what we have here in this very special place.

An opening reception was held on Sunday March 10th and there will be a special event at the Francine Kelly Gallery honoring the 185 island people who have been involved in the MVC since it started in 1974.

MVC 50 years old

If you are interested in the work of the MVC visit the exhibition from March 10th through March 30th at Featherstone Center for the Arts, in Oak Bluffs.
