Memorial Day Preparations on Martha's Vineyard

It's very easy to become complacent living on Martha's Vineyard, you can easily take for granted this island and complain about its quirks and challenges, but when I drove up island today, first to meet a broker to preview this new listing on the south shore, and then to open up this house for a showing on Squibnocket Ridge,  I was really overcome by how special a place this is. How lucky we are to live here and to experience all that we do in the world of real estate on Martha's Vineyard.

The sun was hot today. As I drove down South Road I noticed Kara Taylor's gallery next to the Grey Barn Farm, getting ready to open this weekend. Kara will be open Friday – Monday 11 til 5.

Big Sky Tents had five or six trucks at The Allen Farm, putting up tents for someones special day, and the Chilmark Store was buzzing, gearing up to meet the summer demand.

Down dusty dry dirt roads I met a handful of pick up trucks. Everyone smiled and waved as we each took turns in pulling over to let the other through. All of us anonymous but united in our endeavors working in some capacity for the property owners who will return to their summer homes this weekend. Because this is the way it is here. And rather than resentment or jealousy I sensed a real feeling of honor and gratitude from the people I met today. To be able to enjoy and work at these beautiful properties in these magical locations on this little isle in the Atlantic ocean.

As you would imagine, there's lots happening this weekend. Galleries, restaurants and store openings. Cook outs and partys to attend. Here are a few suggestions:

Pick up a piece of island art and support a good cause at The West Tisbury Agricultural Hall this weekend when it's transformed into the annual Friends of Family Planning Art Gala. Friday- Sunday 27-29th May.http://friendsoffamilyplanning.org/art-show/about-the-show/

The Polly Hill Arboretum opens it's visitor center this weekend and is kicking off with a Memorial Day plant sale on Saturday 28th.  http://www.pollyhillarboretum.org/

It was the first week for Lobster Rolls at the Grace Church in Vineyard Haven last friday. I always see that sign and think summer is here! And it's good to go now, because come July and August the line is around the corner to Franklin street!

Gallery Josephine in Oak Bluffs has an opening for New York Artist Sylvia Maier, on Saturday May 28th from 6-8pm. This new gallery is located on Dukes County Road where the Dragonfly gallery used to be, on the corner opposite Alison Shaws gallery. Sylvia Maier's striking portraits commemorate the mothers of those lost to police brutality through her work entitled "The Circles Of Mothers".  Gallery Josephine brings something different to the art scene on the Vineyard, their exhibitions are refreshing and always thought provoking.Www.galleryjosephine.com
