A Vintage Gem in the William Street Historic District

Built in 1842 by Jane (Smith) Luce, the wealthy widow of Timothy Luce, 27 Spring Street is a stunning example of Greek Revival architecture. It was originally constructed for her son, Jirah Luce, who left for the California Gold Rush soon after it was built, (much to his mother's chagrin!).

This historic residence remarkably survived the Great Fire of August 11, 1883, when a fierce nor’easter drove flames through Main Street, consuming 72 buildings across 40 acres. In the town’s swift recovery, the First Baptist Church, which is a striking Queen Anne-style landmark opposite the house, was built in 1885 at the corner of William and Spring, replacing its fire-ravaged predecessor at a cost of $6,500 (approximately $200,000 today).

Over the years, 27 Spring Street has undergone tasteful additions while preserving its historic charm. The five-bedroom, four-bathroom home boasts five fireplaces, central air conditioning, and an abundance of natural light, thanks to its generous south-facing windows.

Upon entering, the original winding staircase in the front hallway serves as a sculptural centerpiece, welcoming visitors with timeless elegance. The original staircase even has the "mortgage button" at the base of its bannister..... this was believed to be a token, typically made from whale bone, that was placed by the builder when his work was complete and his fees were paid off.

The heart of the home is the inviting screen porch, a perfect retreat for morning coffee, afternoon refreshments, and evening gatherings.  The porch was added by the current owners providing wonderful additonal three-season living space.

The property’s recent updates include a newly redone roof over the porch and the bathrooms have been modernized with classic marble and crisp white tilework.

The open kitchen/breakfast room is both stylish and functional, featuring a Viking five-burner gas range, black granite countertops, and an integrated dishwasher. A separate laundry room is conveniently located off the pantry.

Throughout the home, original wide-plank pine floors, decorative "bulls eye" door moldings, and classic six-over-six paned windows pay homage to its rich history.

Located just one block from Main Street and two blocks from the ferry, the home offers easy access to the town’s best amenities. Enjoy a morning coffee, an evening dinner, a quick game of tennis at the nearby courts, or a sunset stroll to Owen Park Beach or the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club.

Plus theres is off street parking for 2 cars.

Timeless and elegant, 27 Spring Street is a rare blend of historic preservation and modern comfort and is being offered for sale for $3,195,000
