THE CAPAWOCK THEATRE OPENING

It is hard to believe that the Eisenhauer Gallery in Edgartown is celebrating its 15th year!  Fortunately Elizabeth and her husband Paul are experts in planning a wonderful gallery opening.  With oysters on the half shell, a range of fine wines, and Jonny Hoy playing in the courtyard, everyone had the fun of enjoying art and people… all the rocking chairs on the porch were full and in motion….

The Island Community Chorus performed Saturday and Sunday April 11th and 12th at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. Sunday afternoon the audience was enthusiastic and so were the ninety-something members of the choir. They seemed eager to perform and perhaps more confident given that they performed the previous evening. The setting was light, open and intimate offering a nice opportunity to admire again, Margo Datz’ trompe l’oeil work (she completed the mural in 2013) and to appreciate the rich quality of sound.

Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn played at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Art Center Wednesday April 15th to a full and extremely enthusiastic audience.  For those who do not know this married musical duo, Bela is a gifted banjo player who composes and performs with great musicians from all over the world in a vast range of genres. He has been nominated for 30 Grammy awards and has won 15; Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, his band from the late 80’s, combined blue grass, jazz and rock- he’s a “musician’s musician” and it’s clear that Bela’s mind never stops…

It was a beautiful day to celebrate the summer solstice in Aquinnah at the Light House. Young and old, human and canine, up-islanders and down-islanders gathered to enjoy the longest day of the year and remind ourselves of how important it is to help SAVE THE GAY HEAD LIGHTHOUSE.

Once again, people lined up as far as the Court House to enter the huge tents at the Dr. Daniel Fisher House for the annual Taste of the Vineyard Gourmet Stroll hosted by Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust. Young and old, traditionally and eclectically dressed, year-rounders and summer folks picked up their plastic trays and wine glasses and confirmed their strategies for navigating the course. As always, food and beverage vendors were lined up with their signs and their creatively arranged delicacies throughout the three tents and although a few areas were a little tight with too much “traffic”, most folks managed to enjoy sampling, sipping, walking and talking.

We call him Owl Man. Well, I call him Owl Man. And not out loud. Philip Hunsaker leads one of the best activities at Felix Neck, the organized evening owl walk. It begins with people of all ages gathering in the main teaching room to listen to Philip, the resident owl expert, explain the unique characteristics of owls.

“No one with cancer needs to be alone.” This is the mission statement of the Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group. Hosting their Evening Under the Stars event Thursday evening, May 15th, members and supporters mingled, wined and dined at Farm Neck Golf Club to celebrate over 26 years of helping Islanders with cancer get through their challenges.
